The Foreign Languages Department aims to facilitate language learning for university students who require language competence and skills necessary for an academic education in their chosen departments and later on in their careers. In English undergraduate programs, the language of instruction is 100% in English and preparatory education is compulsory. In associate degree programs and Turkish undergraduate programs, the language of instruction is Turkish and English Preparatory School is optional with a tuition fee. Freshmen students take a placement test. If they score above 60, they are qualified to take the Proficiency Exam. If they score 60 in the Proficiency Exam, they are exempt from the Preparatory School. These exempt students start their department courses and take ENG 101 and ENG 102, academic English courses. If students fail to pass the Proficiency Exam or score lower than 60 in the placement test, they are registered in the Preparatory School and placed in classes according to their levels.

Proficiency Exam

The Proficiency Exam tests Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking skills. The speaking exam is conducted in a one-on-one interview-style method. It is required to get at least 60 points from the Proficiency Exam in order to be exempt from attending the Preparatory School. See the format and parts of the exam below:

Exemption (from Preparatory School)

Students who receive 60 points or more from the Proficiency Exam will be exempted from the Preparatory Program and start their departmental courses. In addition, those who have certification of the following exams and meet the required grade are exempted from the Preparatory Program. The validity of external examination documents is determined as 2 years for TOEFL and PTE, 5 years for YDS and YÖKDİL and 3 years for the other exams. 

Ceritificates are accepted at the beginning of the academic year during student registration.
